The first match of the ODI series, saw India outclass England across all departments of the match, and come out victorious. Virat Kohli missed the ODI, which saw Yashasvi Jaiswal and Harshit Rana get their maiden India 50-over caps. Philip Salt did provide England with a brisk start, but soon England lost wickets, which put pressure on the middle order. Rana and Ravindra Jadeja kept England down and out, claiming three wickets apiece, but Jacob Bethell's fifty, and a late cameo from Jofra Archer saw England record a sub-par total of 248.India got off to a poor start with Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma getting out cheaply, but Shreyas Iyer and Shubman Gill had other plans. The duo added 94 runs for the third wicket and brought India back into the contest, Iyer departed for a well-made 59, and soon Axar Patel joined Gill in the middle. The pair struck a 100-plus stand, where Patel slammed his third and Gill registered his 14th ODI half-century, respectively. Adil Rashid did provide some pseudo entertainment getting two quick wickets but it was too late as Hardik Pandya and Jadeja completed the job for India.

Victory! Apart from a bit of faltering in the last few overs, India were dominant in the match. Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja ensured that India went past the finish line without any jitters, and have managed to hand the hosts a 1-0 series lead by winning the first ODI by four wickets.

Out! The golden arm of Jacob Bethell has done the trick for England. Bethell dismisses the in-form Shreyas Iyer on 59, who looked to take the match away from England's grasp with his whirlwind knock.
