Asian Games 2018 Highlights Day 9: Neeraj Chopra’s Gold Medal and 3 Silver Medals in Athletics Dominate the Day for India

So, that's the end of today's action as far as India is concerned. Neeraj Chopra’s gold medal in Javelin throw was the highlight of the day, It was India's eight gold medal at the Asian Games 2018.  Apart from the gold, India bagged three silver medals in track and field events. Dharun Ayyasamy, Sudha Singh, and Neena Varakil won silver medals in different events. Saina Nehwal also clinched the bronze medal in badminton singles.  Updated Asian Games 2018 Medals Tally.  

India beat Japan 3-1 in men's table tennis team to qualify for the semifinal. And that assures India of another medal.

In men's high jump final, Chethan Balasubramanya has finished eighth. China’s You Wang won the gold, Korea’s Sanghyeok Woo took silver while Syria’s Majd Eddin Ghzal and Japan’s Naoto Tobe finished joint third.  

Jinson Johnson qualifies for the of final men's 800m after finishing on top in Heat 1 with a timing of 1:47.39. Manjit Singh also qualifies for final with a timing of 1:48.64, he finished 8th. In women's table tennis team quarterfinals, India suffered a 1-3 defeat to Hong Kong after Manika Batra lost 8-11, 8-11, 13-11 to Wai Doo Hoi Kem in the fourth match.

In boxing, Dheeraj beats Kyrgyzstan's Nurlan Kobashev 3-0 to make it to quarterfinal of Men's Light Welter (64kg) and in squash, India beat Singapore 3-0 to register their second successive win in men's team event.

BIG NEWS! India's Neeraj Chopra wins gold in men's javelin throw final. This is India's 8th gold at the 2018 Asian Games. China’s Qizhen Liu takes silver medal while Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem walks away with the bronze medal. Neeraj’s best throw of 88.06 came in the third attempt. India's Neena Varakil has won a  silver medal in Women's long jump final. She finishes second in the women's long jump final with a best jump of 6.51m. Thi Thu Thao Bui of Vietnam takes the gold medal with her best jump of 6.55. Xiaoling XU settles for silver.

Apart from two back to back silver medals in track and field events, Indian boxers enjoyed a good outing with Vikas Krishan and Amit Panghal registering comprehensive victories by identical 5-0 margins in their respective bouts. Vikas overpowered Ahmed Tanveer of Pakistan by unanimous decision while Amit earned a similar decision against Mongolia's Enkhmandakh Kharkhu. Both boxers have now entered the quarter-finals. Vikas will fight Tanglatihan Erbieke of China in the last eight stage. The Chinese had defeated Pazzyyev Nursahet of Turkmenistan in the pre-quarterfinals. 

Amit will take on Kim Jang Ryong of North Korea in the quarters. Kim had faced tough challenge from Omid Ahmadisafa of Iran in the round of 16 before scraping through with a narrow 3-2 verdict.

Another silver medal comes India's way as Sudha Singh clocking 9:40.03 finishes second in Women's 3,000m Steeplechase event. She finishes behind Bahrain’s Winfred Ravi who looked 9:36.52 while Vietnam’s The Oanh Nguyen wins bronze medal.

There you go! It's a silver medal for India. Dharun Ayyasamy clinches it in Men's 400m Hurdles. As he clocks 48.96 seconds, this is a national record as well. Abderrahman Samba of Qatar takes the gold medal after clocking 47.66. Japan’s Takatoshi Abe bags bronze.

Anu Raghavan and Jauna Murmu finish fourth and fifth respectively in the women’s 400m hurdles final. So, that means no medal for India. Anu Raghavan clocked 5.92s while Jauna Murmu clocked 57.48s 

Neena Varakil starts with a jump of 6.41m. She is at the top as of now out of five athletes. Meanwhile, Nayana James starts off with a 6.08m in her first attempt, she is on fourth. Total 11 participants are participating.

India defeated Vietnam in Group D match of Men's Table Tennis competition. Sathiyan Gnanasekaran, Sharath Kamal Achanta and Harmeet Rajul Desai all won their respective matches. With this, India look all set for their place in the quarterfinals. 

Boxer Vikas Krishan has qualified for quarterfinals after winning his Round of 16 bout vs Pakistan’s Tanveer Ahmed in men's 75kg category. He won it by 5-0 after all five judges award Vikas 10 points in each of the three rounds.

Riding high on Rani Rampal's four goals, Indian women beat Thailand 5-0 to remain unbeaten in group stage.  They will either face Japan or Malaysia in the semi-finals.

23-year-old Indian hockey player Rani Rampal is on fire as she scored her fourth goal of the match against Thailand to take India to 5-0 in women's group match on Monday.

After staying silent till half-time, Indian women have unleashed attack against Thailand, scoring third goal in quick time. It is Monika who scored the third goal to take India to 3-0 up against Thailand. The first two goals were scored by Rani Rampal.

It is second goal for Rani Rampal and India as they move 2-0 up against Thailand in women's hockey group match.

After Indian men's team thrashed Indonesia 3-0 in team event, it is India's women's team led by Asiad 2018 bronze medal winners Dipika Pallikal, Joshna Chinappa to a comfortable 3-0 victory over Iran in women's team pool B match.

Finally a goal in the India vs Thailand match. It is Rani Rampal who finds the net and gives India a 1-0 lead in 36th minute of Women's Tournament Pool B match.
