JAC expands electric vehicle range with T9 PHEV bakkie

JAC Motors, South Africa’s electric truck leader, introduces the T9 2.0L TGDI PHEV double cab bakkie, broadening its green energy offerings.

JAC Motors, renowned for its battery-electric truck leadership in South Africa, is set to expand its electric vehicle (EV) line-up with the launch of the T9 2.0L TGDI PHEV double cab bakkie. Building on its success with electric trucks in major fleets, JAC is venturing into the lifestyle bakkie segment.

Powerful hybrid performance

The T9 PHEV combines a 2.0L turbo-petrol engine (160kW, 370Nm) with two Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors. The front motor delivers 60kW (peak 130kW) and 150Nm (peak 300Nm), while the rear motor produces 70kW (peak 150kW) and 150Nm (peak 340Nm).

“The combined power output of the petrol engine and electric motors reach an impressive 290kW and 670Nm,” says Karl-Heinz Göbel, the CEO of JAC Motors South Africa. “Even with depleted batteries, the 2.0L engine ensures consistent performance.”

Efficient charging and battery technology

The T9 PHEV features a 31.2kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, supporting both CCS2 AC and DC charging. A full charge takes about 85min via DC fast charging and 4.5 hours with AC charging.

Enhanced safety and off-road capabilities

The T9 PHEV includes advanced driver assistance systems, such as lane departure warning, rear cross-traffic alert, and forward collision warning. Its multi-link rigid axle rear suspension and electronic differential locks enhance off-road performance. With a 3 500kg braked towing capacity, it is ideal for hauling trailers and caravans.

Expanding the T-Series

“We are excited to offer South African motorists a green-energy alternative to traditional double cab bakkies,” concludes Göbel. “The T9 PHEV is our first lifestyle PHEV, with a battery-electric T9 also on the horizon.”

The T9 2.0L TGDI PHEV is scheduled for launch in the second quarter of 2025.
