The fifth phase of polling is especially crucial for the incumbent BJP, for which as many as 39 seats are at stake in the seven states. However, the polling on Monday has become a matter of prestige for the Congress as party President Rahul Gandhi and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi's parliamentary constituency- Amethi and Raebareli respectively, went to polls on May 6.

The NDA in Bihar (BJP, JDU and LJP) will look to gain seats compared to previous Lok Sabha Elections (though they were not fighting together then). The biggest gain that the BJP expects from this phase is in West Bengal, where the party did not do well last time despite the Narendra Modi wave. Polling was held in Jharkhand for four seats.
