In the wake of the unprecedented rise in petrol prices -- highest ever after the surge of September, 2014 -- the government on Sunday said relief measures would be adopted. Union Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said the situation is being monitored, adding that the government would take the requisite interventionary measures.

The latest hike in fuel prices, since the conclusion of assembly elections in Karnataka, is caused due to the surge in global crude oil prices. The international rate, used as a benchmark for revising fuel prices, has jumped from $78.4 in April to $84.97 on May 14.
